Testing Advice from IB Alumni!!
Please keep in mind, this is coming from seniors after the fact...how would that impact this? I don't know...maybe they were crying as they contributed to this list...
List of things SRs found helpful during the test:
Know what a commentary is: be familiar with the rubric and what you need to do. Walk in there knowing.
Force yourself to re-read to passage/poem: read every word
Have time management: how long to outline? Know more ideas are better than editing.
prioritizing time for revising --10 min MINIMUM see previous advice
Review lit devices: common ones and think about impact before hand- make a list
Practice pre-writing, brainstorming: know which style works best for you
Write line # in notes rather than looking for it later: you won't go back: include on outline or in margin
THESIS WORK: title, author, techniques, impact (appreciation of lit features)
Review intros and conclusions: how to start and end strong...think about a generic start: "All writers try to..."
Advice from SRs to kids
Wear comfy clothes, shoes you can take off (wear socks)
Hair up
No bracelets
No swishy pants or jackets
Get good night's sleep
Eat breakfast and have food for when you are done
Don't just roll out of bed to test, do something to wake up mind -- crossword questions, for ex.
Organization is hardest part -- prewrite! transitions! line numbers!
READ and RE-READ (and re-read and re-read)
Overestimate time
Get there early -- try to get a good seat away from distracting people and things
Don't sit by friends: seriously don't do it.
Don't worry about what anyone else is doing: they will pick a different passage AND that's ok.
Don't use pen that will bleed through: bring more than one pen: blue or black only
Don't freak out -- do something relaxing night before
Re-read after prewriting / before writing
Write note to self on scratch paper: WHAT(is author doing)? HOW? WHY?
Ask for more paper two pages before you need it
Get some kleenex when you go in
Take earplugs if you have noise issues
Don't distract others- this test isn't about just you- it's also about everyone else-- don't rip or crumple
paper...don't click pens...don't tap your fingers...don't sigh loudly...we can't tell you to shut up so don't
take advantage of us....
Commentary: focus on WHAT(is author doing)? HOW? WHY?
The why is the "so-what" in this situation. The "so-what" is also appreciation of literary features...
Length: write for the entire time. Consider paragraphs and transitions...word choice....handwriting (cfalk...)
Remember: You'll be fine. We've prepped you for this. You are a great person. We will all still like you regardless of test results...well... :) Have fun!!
